The Rossville School Review Committee in Coleville wishes to express our thanks to our community of Coleville and the surrounding region for all the support given through the review process of our school. Thank you to all who took the time to write letters of support. On January 19, 2010 the Sun West Board of Education voted unanimously to suspend the review process on Rossville School, their conclusion being that the operation of Rossville School does not compromise the rest of the students or ratepayers in the division. Rossville School has the ability to provide an excellent education to its students. Sun West Board members commented that the physical condition of the facility is excellent, and projected enrollment has the potential to increase. Deliberate action has been taken by the community of Coleville over the last two years to position themselves for growth with the development of serviced lots for sale, and upgrades to all other infrastructure that can support a population of 500 plus. The Rossville School Review Committee received regional support from several sources. These included the Honorable Bill Boyd MLA for this constituency and minister of Energy and Resources, the Town of Kindersley, the Kindersley Business Focus group, West Central Enterprise region and SARM. We thank Minister Boyd, Tom Geiger, Rick MacDougall, Brenda Burton and Darryl Senecal for their presentations and words of encouragement throughout this whole process. A thank you to the community of Landis for sharing their school review information with us. As this committee worked through the information, we validated the conclusion that smaller and larger rural centres can and need to work together to strengthen each other. All of us acknowledge that job opportunities abound within our region, but for some people the affordability or lifestyle appeal of a larger centre doesn’t fit. Smaller communities with affordable housing bring families who contribute to the economic well being of their own community and surrounding centres. Smaller communities take the onus off larger centres’ infrastructure, but still afford those centres economic diversity. While small communities can’t attract all of the services that a larger centre has, we can still live here and commute for some of these services. Having said this, we still need a number of basic services to remain in each of our own communities. If we all realize this and work towards strengthening this goal, we as a region will all benefit. Saskatchewan was built by pioneers who were willing to work together to form a province. At this time, our province is poised for huge economic growth. We need to stay true to our roots and work together to make it sustainable for all residents.

We share our support with the community of Kindersley in the wake of the fire that destroyed the Exhibition Stadium. Having just gone through the School Review process, we know all too well how a community feels when they lose something that is important to many.
As Kindersley looks to others to help fill their hockey and skating needs, Coleville has extended that courtesy to several hockey teams, the Star Skate program and some curling teams. We are attempting to open the booth in order to serve the nutritional needs of the athletes and their families!
Joelle Johnston and Jenn Gartner are co-ordinating the food booth and shifts. If you are willing to work any shifts, please contact Jenn at 965-2261 or stop in at the rink between 4:00 and 8:00 to fill in the sign up sheet. We really need your help to accomplish this. |

Coleville indoor soccer has partnered with Kindersley Soccer Association. Coleville and Kindersley teams are taking turns driving back and forth for games each week. This year it will continue for outdoor soccer as well. Kindersley teams are willing to drive out here for games as well. Grades 5, 6 and 7 students at Rossville School are now playing basketball. Games are either in Coleville at Rossville School or Kindersley at Elizabeth or Westberry School. A Learn to Skate program is happening once a week at the Rink in Coleville. We hope to expand this program next year to include powerskating and stroke improvement. |

Coleville feature |
|
Jamac Publishing will be doing a feature article on Coleville soon. The School Review process gathered some interesting facts about our community. Coleville has a population of about 287 people with 168 adults employed. 73% of this number are employed locally out of Coleville businesses or directly in the surrounding oilfield. Only 16% of our population commute to Kindersley for employment. The 2006 Census information shows the median age at 38.2 years.
Approximately 28 businesses operate in the Village. These businesses employed approximately 250 people as at December 2009. This does not take into account all contract operators or their employees.
When we compare the amenities we have to other communities of similar size, Coleville does extremely well. What we are short on is housing and that is one of the things we will be working to change.
The information we have gathered indicates increased activity in the natural resources industry, particularly in the Coleville-Dodsland area. Minister Boyd is predicting this level of activity to continue over the next five years. |

Attention:
We still need recipes from present and past students of Rossville School!
If you can help us with this by getting in contact with former students or staff and asking them to submit recipes, we would be very grateful. We would like at least three recipes per person and would like that individual to include the years that they attended Rossville School. Help us make this project a success!
Recipes may be dropped off at the School in the mornings or emailed to kathy.sproule@sasktel.net.
Thank you so much from your Rossville School Community Council! |
